Influenza is a very contagious disease of short duration caused by A, B or C types of virus. The disease causes chills followed by fever, general weakness, aches, and pains, loss of appetite and inflammation of nose and pharynx.
Once the vitality of nose and pharynx membranes has been weakened by influenza virus, bacteria present in mouth and pharynx commonly invade tissues and produce complications such as sinusitis, ear infection and pneumonia. Make the patient as comfortable as possible and avoid secondary infections and resulting complications.
Rest in bed helps the patient to conserve his strength and hastens recovery. As symptoms subside, return to activity should be gradual.
An ice bag applied intermittently to the forehead helps to reduce body temperature and headache.
For cough, steam inhalations three times a day are helpful.
